O/S Loading

1. Load Windows Operating System ? XP Home, XP Professional etc. Make sure that you have a CD for re-installation and that you have copied the Registration number for safe keeping. You will have 30 days to register the OS [Operating System] ? so leave this task until your computer is up and running properly and protected. Back to top

Printers etc

2. Add printers, USB devices etc one at a time. Normally load the software from CD if supplied before connecting equipment. If there is no CD wait until you can safely go online and download software from the manufacturer?s sites. Back to top

Virus checker

3. Install virus checker programme ? Norton Antivirus etc. Back to top

Internet connection

4. Setup Internet connection ? go to Control Panel, Network Connections, set up new connection. Enable XP firewall ? normally offered through this procedure. Back to top

Virus Checker Live Update

5. Run virus ?Live Update? ? this does not go through a web browser like Internet Explorer 6 where all the virus vulnerabilities exist. Back to top

Windows Updates

6. Update Windows via online updates.
a. Open Windows Update in Help and Support Centre. ? from Start button
b. On the Windows Update home page, click Scan for Updates. Back to top

Adaware

7. Download Adaware popup and dialler detection software. Back to top

GOOGLE

8. Download Google Toolbar which stops popups and provides a neat search facility.. Back to top

Connections - email and Internet

9. Configure mail and internet connections. Back to top

Driver updates

10. Now you can check for Driver updates as in 6. above. Back to top

Add applications

11. Install software applications. Back to top

Adobe Reader for pdf files

12. Download Adobe Reader Back to top

Virus not removed

13. Finally: If Norton Antivirus discovers a virus it may well say it cannot remove it. Ask for sheet IT006 to deal with this problem. Back to top

Maintenance

UDATE Antivirus and popup spotters at least once a week, run them once a week, Adaware will always find rubbish. Defragment hard drive weekly after running weekly antivirus check. Back to top
